Upper Place – Savour European Culinary Delights with A Panoramic View of Singapore’s Cityscape
February 28, 2018

The Upper Place restaurant, situated on the rooftop of the Wangz Hotel, is one of the most utterly charming eatery imaginable. We felt as though we have stepped into our dream garden. This cozy and intimate restaurant, which boasts al fresco and indoor dining, accommodates up to 76 people. The chic and airy green space certainly aligns with Singapore’s vision of being a ‘garden city’.
The Upper Place has created a welcoming atmosphere for all groups of diners. Whether you’re a couple looking for a tranquil and romantic place for dinner that isn’t too inaccessible, or a bunch of colleagues looking for a comfortable place to unwind after work, or a group of family and friends celebrating a special occasion, this restaurant has everything covered.
Although the menu isn’t extensive, the Upper Place believes in quality over quantity. You can choose from a selection of starters, meats, seafood, poultry and desserts from their a la carte menu. Spoilt for choice and can’t decide? Just go for the 3-course set lunch, express set lunch, or 3-course set dinner. My boyfriend and I wanted to try different dishes, so we had the 3-course set dinner which allows diners to choose one starter and one dessert from the a la carte menu. There are 3 tiers of mains which are priced at $39++, $49++ and $54++ for the set dinner.
Our starters were the Hokkaido Scallops and the Half Lobster. The former is served with somen, daikon dashi and miso while the latter is creatively presented with coconut rice, sambal and mango. The scallops are fresh, plump and juicy. This starter is light on the palate, but if you prefer a stronger flavour, we recommend the half lobster.
As for the mains, we had the Braised Wagyu Karubi and the Baked Halibut. The tender beef is accompanied by potatoes, shiitake mushrooms and carrots while the aromatic baked halibut comes with daikon dashi, wakame and miso. Both of us preferred the baked halibut with its nice flavour and texture. We found it well-seasoned and baked just right.
The Classic Tiramisu and the Lemon Meringue Waffle ended our dinner on a sweet note. The layers of mascarpone give the Tiramisu a creamy texture which contrasts very well with the crunch from the savoiardi while the berries give the classic dessert a refreshing finish. The waffle, on the other hand, is fluffy and topped with yuzu sorbet. It has just the right amount of sweetness.
The Upper Place also offers vegetarian options upon request. You can complement your meal with a choice of premium wines from around the world too. We really enjoyed the ambience and the food. It is indeed a great dining place for everyone.
