Laomei Green Reef – The Incredible Phenomenon That Happens Only In April & May Annually
May 18, 2018

Located on Taiwan’s North Coast, you’ll be able to find this spectacular view of Laomei Green Reef only in April and May every year. This phenomenon only takes place after the Northeast monsoons die down, and the vibrant green algae covering the neat rows of stone troughs create a rare and unique sight. The algae-covered rocks are extremely slippery and dangerous and it’s best not to walk on them, but I took the risk and even lied down, getting wet just for the drone shot!

This gorgeous stretch of structured volcanic rocks along the coastal shoreline is caused by the Datun volcanoes eruption many centuries ago. The rocks are submerged in the water for long periods of time, and the lush green algae soon grew in abundance, covering the rocks. I’m pretty sure the thought of looking at a bed full of algae isn’t enticing, but imagine the image of blue skies with puffy clouds or the bright orange sun dipping into the horizon during the golden hour. This magical moment is certainly worth experiencing. Do remember to check the tides because you’ll only get to admire the luscious green algae during low tides.
Just a fun fact – Laomei is a coastal village and is actually well-known for the blooming of blanket flowers from May to August every year. The blanket flowers were imported from North America in the early 20th century and grew rapidly all over the Northern coast of Taiwan. This type of flowers is able to sustain the strong winds, resist humidity and have a long lifespan, which is why the villagers love them as they help to prevent the villagers’ residence and crops from destruction caused by wind and sand.
Set adjacent to the Southeast side of Laomei Green Reef is the first kite themed park in Taiwan, where Shimen International Kite Festival is held every year, attracting a large number of local and international visitors. With the ideal landscape and right wind direction, it creates a perfect kite competition location. I’ve never participated in such events, and I hope I’ll get a chance to someday. Well, it sounds fun!
If you are heading to Laomei Green Reef from Taipei city, take the MRT to Danshui Station (淡水捷運站) and from there, take the Danshui Bus – Jinshan route or King Bus (KuoKuang Bus) – Keelung (基隆) or Jinshan (金山) route to Laomei Park (老梅站). However, if you find public transport too time-consuming, you can hire a driver for a day trip and include Laomei Green Reef in the itinerary. I recommend engaging Eason, or affectionately known by his passengers as Cola, as he is very friendly and helpful, and offers reasonable rates. You can reach him here.
