A couple of weeks ago, I asked my Instagram friends what’s the first three things they look at when booking a hotel for their holidays. To my surprise, quite a number of them are interested in boutique hotels featuring a whimsical theme. So, on my trip to Kaohsiung, I decided to check out the Icon Hotel. The pictures of the rooms displayed on their website left me spoilt for choice. It was tough deciding which room I liked best.

There are different room categories ranging from the classic double to the discovery single/double to the original double to the privilege quad room to the Icon rooftop suite which accommodates up to 6 people. The quad rooms are really child-friendly, and one of the rooms is equipped with a slide and a mini playground. I’m pretty sure my pictures are doing the talking at the moment. What’s more – the corridors are as charmingly and colourfully decorated as the themed rooms. Seeing the vibrant designs perk up one’s mood almost instantly.

There is a café located at the basement of the hotel where breakfast is served. The spread isn’t fanciful but it is very nicely presented and tastes delicious.

Besides being drawn to the attractive rooms at the hotel, I’m also very pleased that the hotel is conveniently located near both the Formosa Boulevard Metro Station and the Central Park Metro Station. You can easily walk to the stations under 10 minutes. The Formosa Boulevard Metro Station also has an impressive “Dome of Light” display. It features the largest glass work in the world, designed by Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata. It is 30 metres in diameter and covers an area of 2,180 square metres, made up of 4,500 glass panels.

You can get your shopping done at the Xinjuejiang shopping area which is pretty similar to Taipei’s Ximending shopping district. Food is aplenty at the Liuhe Night Market which is about 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel. But, you don’t have to wait till the evening for good food because the hotel’s surrounding is filled with many eateries selling local favourites.

Moreover, the Icon Hotel is a 5 minutes’ drive away from Kaohsiung Railway Station and a 12 minutes’ drive away from the Kaohsiung International Airport. So, here’s a wonderful and conveniently located themed boutique hotel you can consider if you’re visiting Kaohsiung.
