Gaomei Wetlands – The Spectacular Sunset Here Is Hard To Beat
December 02, 2017
Situated in the Southern part of the mouth of Dajia River lies a hidden gem – Gaomei Wetlands (高美濕地). This area is more than a thousand hectares in size, with at least 120 species of birds calling it home. You will often find wild geese, crabs, and mud-skippers on this grassy and muddy tidal flats. The highlight here is the windmills standing proudly on the wetlands. You can either choose to sit on the boardwalk to enjoy the sea breeze and watch the beautiful sunset, or take off your shoes and feel the softness of the wetlands between your toes.

The sight of the sunset against the windmills and the puffy clouds is almost unbeatable. I recommend removing your shoes for a leisure stroll in the wetlands. Just remember … The farther you walk, the fewer number of times you’ll get photobombed by tourists. Do be careful if you are mounting a tripod stand into the wetlands as the wind is extremely strong.
Gaomei Wetlands is easily accessible if you are self-driving, or taking a taxi. There are many taxis in Taichung City, and you can just negotiate a flat rate with the driver for a round trip. If you’re commuting by public transport from Taichung THSR Station, bus 655 runs on weekends and public holidays to Gaomei Visitor Centre which is approximately 15 minutes’ walk from the boardwalk. On weekdays, you can catch bus 93 to Dajia, alight at Qingshui Main Stop, and switch to Geya bus 178 or 179 to Gaomei Wetlands.
Don’t forget to check the weather forecast before making your way to Gaomei Wetlands. I highly recommend this gorgeous place if you also love chasing sunsets like me!

Hi Jake, Gaomei Wetlands is open all year round but you need to check https://www.cwb.gov.tw/V7e/forecast/fishery/tide_height.htm for the timing of the high tide. The boardwalk can be off limits and guarded during the time of high tide and it can last between 2 and 2.5 hours.
