5 Interesting Ways to Catch the Spectacular Sunrises in Bagan

5 Interesting Ways to Catch the Spectacular Sunrises in Bagan

March 16, 2018

From the 9th to the 13th centuries, Bagan was the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan. Over 10,000 temples were built over this period, and a few hundreds more were added between the 13th and 20th centuries. However, the devastating earthquake damaged a large number of temples. While some were completely destroyed, other remaining ruins were renovated.

These remaining temples combine to form one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia today. Needless to say, the views of the sunrises and sunsets in Bagan are almost unbeatable. I’ve sussed out 5 interesting ways to catch the sunrises in Bagan.

#1 – Head to any Empty Field located on a Hilltop

One morning in Bagan, a Myanmar travel blogger brought me to this relatively quiet spot to catch the sunrise. There were only two other small groups of people waiting to capture the glorious moment at this particular location. I love how peaceful the place is without tourists overcrowding (especially without those who talk at the top of their voices). We managed to catch the sunrise with unblocked views of the pagodas and hot air balloons rising above the horizon.

#2 – Get a Vantage Point from the 60-metres high Bagan Tower

This 13-storey high structure is also known as the Nann Myint Viewing Tower. There are viewing rooms and restaurants at the top levels. The unobstructed 360-degrees panoramic view from this tower will leave you speechless. However, you do need to head down early to reserve a good photography spot because the viewing platform gets crowded very quickly during the golden hour. Do note that there is an entrance fee of 5 USD per person.

#3 – Watch the Sunrise from the Top of a Pagoda

In the past, people were allowed to climb up the big and famous pagodas for spectacular views of the sunrises and the sunsets. However, the conservation team has realized that these pagodas are often damaged due to the visitors’ negligence and the extreme they could go just for that perfect shot. Hence, ascending the pagoda is no longer allowed.

#4 – Experience a Horse-ride at the Crack of Dawn

This special “Around Temple Tour Bagan” tour package organized by the Ayeindamar travel company begins at 6am and lasts for 2.5 hours. It costs 95 USD per person. You will pass through many fascinating temples and ruins in Bagan on horseback before catching the sunrise at an open field. It was a memorable trekking experience which I recommend.

#5 – Take Flight in a Hot Air Balloon

This is probably the most touristic and most expensive activity to do in Bagan, but it is definitely worthwhile if you are planning to surprise your significant other. Due to the shortage of time, I did not get to ride a hot air balloon but I guess you’ll be getting an incredible bird’s eye view of the Bagan plains. I’ll have to do this the next time I re-visit Bagan!

I’m usually not a morning person, and I prefer chasing sunsets. But, Bagan’s picturesque landscapes during sunrise motivated me to get out of bed early. Feel free to comment and let me know if there are any other interesting ways of catching the sunrise in Bagan.
