Love Waterfall – An Incredibly Refreshing Morning Hike in Sapa

The Tram Ton Pass is Vietnam’s highest pathway with an observation deck that opens out to the view of its neighbouring Mount Fansipan. Jayden and I hired a driver to bring us around Sapa for a day. The Tram Ton Pass observation deck was our initial planned first stop, but due to the heavy fog, we couldn’t see anything, so we quickly moved on to the Love Waterfall and started the hike early.

The path from the carpark to the Love Waterfall is properly paved and there are steps, but please be careful as the path can get slippery. The hike is about 1.5 kilometres to 2 kilometres long. The Love Waterfall has a height of around 100 metres and begins from the peak of Fansipan Mountain, gushing noisily into the Gold Stream. As we started the hike to the waterfall very early, we were able to get the entire waterfall to ourselves for awhile.

The name of this waterfall, “Love”, is believed to have been derived from a local legend. Fairies bathed in this waterfall a long time ago, and one of the fairies was mesmerised by a young boy playing the flute, and fell in love with him. Like most legends, the unfortunate fairy’s parents found out and forbade her from returning to the waterfall. She was so devastated that she transformed herself into a bird just to be able to be together with her love forever. From then on, the waterfall is famously known as the Love Waterfall.

I recommend visiting the Love Waterfall in the morning as the air is crisp and fresh, and it felt very cooling to walk through the forest before arriving at the majestic waterfall. If you have time and energy for another hike afterwards, you can visit the nearby Silver Waterfall.
