5 Best Hipster Cafes in Seminyak

August 25, 2018

Bali is a world-renowned holiday destination due to its beautiful beaches, sacred temples, impressive waterfalls, lush green rice terraces and other hidden gems. Bali also has a thriving café culture, and I couldn’t resist paying a visit to a few of their top players located in Seminyak. Whether you’re after classic modern Australian breakfasts with Balinese flair or just a really good coffee and desserts, Seminyak is packed with delectable options. Check out the following 5 best hipster cafes in Seminyak.

#1 – Kim Soo

Owners Kim and her youngest daughter Giorgia transformed a decaying and wonderful old Dutch Colonial style building in Seminyak to a place of natural calm and personal style in 2015. Their retail spaces fuse the elements of home and store to bring you their finely honed edit of rare and beautiful homewares, furniture and fashion. It’s a little bit bohemian, a little bit ethnic, classic and contemporary.

As a natural extension to Kim Soo, Café Kim Soo is a living experience of the Kim Soo product range – raw wood, recycled teak root, glassware and ceramics. You will find simple, delicious, family favourites on the menu. The dishes are reasonably priced, and perhaps, one of the cheapest brunch menu you can find on the island. Their baristas are individually trained by their Italian friend who has coffee roasting running through his veins.

Kim Soo

#2 – Mad Pops

Ice cream solves all problems, don’t you agree? If you’re in Seminyak, you can’t miss out on Mad Pops Ice Cream. The non-dairy ice cream is made from fresh local ingredients, and cold-pressed coconuts create the base for their health conscious flavour focused ice cream. I was super fortunate to be able to try their refreshing dragonfruit soft-serve which isn’t a fixed flavour on their menu. This is a great remedy to counter Bali’s scorching hot weather.

Mad Pops
Address: Jl. Kayu Aya No.48, Seminyak, Kuta, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361
Opening Hours: 11am to 10pm daily

This colourful and quirky Mexican bar and restaurant features two floors – the lower floor for the party crowd and the upper floor for those who prefer to sit back, relax and enjoy the music. Motel Mexicola hosts regular house parties with live Latin music. I’m a fan of Mexican food, and I enjoyed the tacos served here so much. Besides tacos, you can try tostadas, aguachile, quesadillas and other antojitos (tapas), accompanied by tequilas, margaritas and Cuba libres.

Motel Mexicola

Don’t be mistaken – Sea Circus is not an actual circus but a cafe, cocktail bar and coffee den. Everyday from 7.30am, you will find the kitchen sending out healthy acai bowls, tasty chilli scrambled eggs and breakfast burritos. Whether it’s a chai tea and chia porridge or an eggs benedict and a bloody mary you’re craving, they’ve got you covered. Hardcore party-goers, rejoice! The menu at Sea Circus also includes a hangover happy meal. You can begin the day with a cold drip coffee, refuel with a protein smoothie or a fresh juice and finish off with their famous passion fruit and guava margarita.
